Liebster Award ~ First nomination on the new blog!

So I was nominated again for a Liebster award many thanks to Nikki from Love At First Write. Go give her some love!  I have been nominated three times before with my old blog Ice Queen's Bookshelf, I am honored to be nominated again with my new blog! I am glad people appreciated the work I put in here, at Ice Cold Passion and of course also at IJskoude Passie, my Dutch counterpart.

Ramblings: Misinterpretation

I really need to get something of my chest, because one of my reviews, got misinterpreted by author, Darren Shan.  You can read, what he had to say about it here: Darren Shan News. It has been bugging me all week so that is why I am writing about it know.


It's my review of Cirque Du Freak #1, which you can read here: Cirque Du Freak. In the review I clearly stated that I was dissappointed by the first book in the series, because I have seen the movie first. This was interpreted by the author as me liking the movie better than the book. NO, that was not what I meant to say at all because my motto really is: Books are always better than the movie.  So I want to rectify this part of my review right here and now:

I in no way intended to say that the movie is better than the book! 

So why was it interpreted that way? I think I know why, the movie ruined the reading experience for me, gave me very high expectations of the book, with lots of action, many things happening at the same time. Where as the book took things a little slower, this took me by surprise and left me with know choice but explaining it, very badly, the way I did in my review. The movie just gave me a false image of what the book might be like. I really wish I could reverse the situation and read the books before seeing the movie. I can promise you this, I will not write a movie review before I read all the books.

This bad feeling also concluded in me picking up the second book in the series: The Vampire's Assistant. I just started reading it friday night and I can promise you that the review for this book is going to be a lot different than that of the first, because I am loving it already. There is less mix up with the movie. Or maybe I have gotten use to the fact that I really need to separate them. Put them in different boxes in my head.

Just the way I did with The Vampire Diaries, which causes them same kind of reactions for people, the way I reacted by seeing Cirque du Freak first before reading it. I heard people say about TVD: the books are so disappointing and  that the TV-series is so much better. (This is when my blood begins to boil because the books are equally as good as the TV-series, just different.) By the way, I haven't read the TVD books after Midnight because they are not written by L.J. but by a ghostwriter.

I hope you all understand a little better where I am coming from now. I am not going to change my review, this article is just to clarify it a little more.  I am glad to get this of my chest I am feeling a little better now.

My favourite place to blog

Today I want to share something fun, well at least I thought is was really funny. I want to share a picture of what my desk looks like on a saturday afternoon, when I am preparing posts, looking for new books and what not! Here it is!

Well in the left corner you see a little bit of my printer, on top of which lies a book about digital drawing and my agenda (with a cute cat on the cover).

The two open books are my notebook and my paperback copy of Bitten by Kelley Armstrong (which I finished on sunday).

Then there is my Raboreader (for banking),  pen and of course more paper to write stuff. And of course the best B-day present I ever got! My kindle!!!

The paper next to my wallet is my TBR-monster! A real big monster! I made a checklist of my TBR and still don't know were to start!

Right, maybe I should explain the two laptops now. The one to the left, is my old one, it still works fine as long as you leave it in one place, I can't pick it up without it almost falling apart. So why keep it then? Well this is my music/tv/movie computer. While I am working on my blog or want to relax I usually put something on either a movie, TV-series or music. As you can see I was listening to some music when I took this picture!

Then there is my new baby, my Macbook! Yeey I finally made the switch to Apple. I am still getting used to it, had to figure out a lot of things in the beginning and I am still not comfortable with working in Pages and Numbers (tips and tricks are always welcome!).

In between the laptops, my morning cup of coffee, and one of the two speakers, providing me with a great sound. I bought these speakers when I lived in Canada, paid about $25 for them and they were totally worth every penny!

I am new to the bookblogasphere so I discovered a lot of new blogs, my favorite is also my dream blog and one of the biggest book blogs out there: Parajunkee!  I also enjoy a lot of smaller blogs please read my Liebster nomination post for those they could all use some followers!

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2013?

I love all the reviews I have written but I love my longest the best of course this is my review for Divergent!

3. Best discussion you had on your blog?

I don’t have many discussion on my blog, mostly reviews and book promotion, but in May I had a little rant about Language Etiquettes and of course my weekly musical meme where I discuss music here my highlights:

Physical event: Manuscripta! I got to chat with Mrs Tatiana de Rosnay!!!  Which was awesome, there were lots of reading too! All in all it was a really interesting day!

I also participated in a virtual event on Facebook: Feed My Reads And Friends I met a lot of new friends and authors. I got to host an hour on this event which was fun. There were some interesting discussions too! I liked the fact that we got to meet authors and chat with them about books and random stuff. 9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?

GOODREADS
I told you that I was a newbie so lets start with Goodreads, which I love! Goodreads is fun because you can keep track of what you are reading, you meet awesome people/bookbloggers from all over the world. And the discussion are very interesting.

AMAZON
 I also discovered Amazon this year, and the reading apps also that every Amazon has a lot of free ebook you can get! Not that I don’t want to buy books but this was also a year I didn’t have any money to spend on fun stuff. So Amazon came in handy to satify my reading addiction.

HET BOEKENFESTIJN
Another bookish discovery for me was: Het Boekenfestijn. A dutch event at which you can buy books for discount prices! They also had a large amount of English books available so happy me! You can find my haul here.

10.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? 

Yes I love participating in reading challenges, when I didn’t work full time I could read around 5 books a month. I mostly participated on the monthly challenges at my Goodreads groups. The once I loved the most were on The Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Group.
Ja ik heb aan verschillende uitdagingen mee gedaan toen ik nog niet full time werkte. Toen kon ik rond de 5 a 10 boeken per maand lezen. Ik deed vaak mee aan de maandelijkse uitdagingen op The Paranormal Romance en Urban Fantasy groep op Goodreads.

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2013 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2014?

Insurgent and Allegiant! and also Catching Fire & Mocking Jay! I think I will have to do a dystopian month next year :) 

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2014 (non-debut)?

These are really difficult questions, you know? But a book that has been smashed in my face for awhile btw it is the most popular book of 2013, I think (since it has started to haunt me) I have to go with the Fault In Our Stars by John Green. As for 2014 I am looking forward to the 3 book in the Dreamers series by Allie Jean! I know she is writing it (she told me on twitter) so that will be my most anticipating read for 2014!

3. 2014 Debut You Are Most Anticipating? Het debuut waar je naar uit kijkt?

So I have no clue of what we can expect in 2014, so I went on Goodreads listopia, after not being satisfied on there resumed  my search on Netgalley. Two books caught my eye: Alienated and Defy. I have come across Alienated on various blogs and really like the idea. Defy sounds a bit like Mulan, which was a movie I really loved when I was younger, who am I kidding? I still love that movie!

4. Series Ending You Are Most Anticipating in 2014? Einde van een serie waar je naar uit kijkt?

Well for a couple of year I have been patiently waiting on the last book in the Night world series by L.J. Smith. I am a big fan of her work, I have almost all her books (I am only missing Forbidden Game). I really hope we will get some new work of her in 2014.

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2014?

1. Read more
2. Turn Swinging Saturdays into a meme 
3. I am also thinking about participating more in meme such as Feature & Follow, Truth or Dare, Stacking The Shelves

1. What was your least favorite book and why?

Least favourite book, I read only two so far this year, but Mystic Wolves by Belinda Boring, was the worst of the two. The last name says a lot about half of te book, it was boring. The scene too streched out, I also had a sense of horrible de-ja-vu, because some sentences/scenes were so alike that they seemed to be copy and pasted throughout the book.

2. When did you start to enjoy reading?

I have always been a reader, when I was in high school, after that a little less. Until I got Twilight, Twilight is what got me back into reading again. After Twilight I searched for other books in this genre to read.

3. What stand-alone book do you wish there was a sequel to? 

Uh, stand-alones, this is a really good question, most of the stand-alones I have read are great on it's own and don't need a sequel. So I went back through my list to see of any could have a great sequel, and I saw Whistling past the Graveyard. That could have an interesting sequel, the nine year old growing up and I am curious if see would be fighting for equality. Read my review here: Review Whistling past the Graveyard

4. What book do you think kicked-off your love for reading? 

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

5. What book that had a sequel did you think should not have had one? 


What's up with all those difficult questions? LOL :D Well I would have to go with Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick.  I didn't really like the first one much, so the series for me could have ended right after the first book!


6. Do you ever DNF books?  If so, what book have you DNF'ed recently?

I mostly finish my books, I have some books I started and put down again, then pick it up again to eventually put it down again. Such as The Host by Stephenie Meyer or the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. I hope to finish them some time but for now they remain half read.

7. What is your favorite genre? 

Must be paranormal! Vampires, werewolves, fairies, witches and warlocks! Other genres I am really starting to enjoy are (Post) apocalyptic and dystopia! I love dystopia because it has so many interesting aspects. The post apocalyptic books mostly are about survival, zombies and lots of fighting I am starting to enjoy those more and more!


8. What is one of your favorite books in your favorite genre?

Twilight is of course one of my favourites (yes I still love it). But I also love all of L.J. Smith's books! They are brilliant! The Vampire diaries (up until Midnight, after that they are not L.J.'s), the Secret Circle, and the Night world series are all really great!

9. What book(s) have you been wanting to read for awhile, but just haven't gotten around to? 


Yup, lots of the books I got on my shelf, but I am really looking forward to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children! I finally got it, started reading it yesterday!

10. What is the greatest number of books that you have been read at one time?

I tried to read 5 at one time, but mostly one or two hold my interest then I will finish them first before the ohers. After I finish the two I will pick up the rest again.

What's going on?

Hi all,
You might have noticed the slide degrees of posts and the lack of many reviews. So here an update on what is going on in my life.

Work

First of all work! Finally after half a year without a job, I got one!  Since August I have been working full time at a large company. Now I got a new job at a new much smaller company which fits perfectly with what kind of company I had in mind. Monday was my first day, I was really excited and I enjoyed the new challenge.

School

I am still finishing up my bachelor degree in International Business and Languages, therefore I spend most of my evenings studying or I was at one of my tutors who helped me prepare for my oral exams. I still had to pass 2 courses each worth 2 EC's, Spanish and German language. I passed my German course last week with a wonderful mark 7.0!

Today I had Spanish. Unfortunately  I didn't pass this one,  this was a real disappointment to me because I put a lot of afford into it, which wasn't repaid. So now I have to take this exam again at the end of the month. This means that this month the posts will be less.

The Goal

The goal is to get back on track with my blog once I finished my bachelor degree, which is of course much more important for me. Like the most important thing I have going on in my life right now! I will be celebrating once I get that awesome piece of paper in my hands!
My goal is to get back to blogging three or four times a week.

What's the plan for this month?

I did finish a couple of books, three to be exact! I will try to get at least those reviewed this month! These are the reviews you can expect this month.

1. What are you currently reading?

Uh Im a currently reading 2 books Visited by Janine Caldwell and Moon Dwellers by David Estes!




















2. What is your favorite book(s) of all time?

Uh that is one though question! I enjoy so many books, it would be a tie between Twilight and The Vampire Diaries. Yes I know Twilight, I just find a lot of Bella in myself, like the awkwardness towards people, tripping over my own feet. Those kind of things. The Vampire Diaries has a lot more going on, it was never what I expected, especially book 5 to 7 (The Return series) (I refuse to read the books after Midnight since they are NOT written by L.J. but by a ghostwriter!!!) was really dark and spine chilling (for me first book I read that I didn't want to read at night alone in my little cabin). Lastly, the greatest fantasy book in the world: Lord of The Rings! Don't think I have to explain that one!

3. How did you come up with your blogs name?
I started out writing about my skating experiences, when we get natural ice and can skate on the lakes here in the Netherlands, the inhabitants of the Netherlands go a little crazy! So I wrote about the tours I skated and posted pictures. Then I started doing some writing about other stuff. I turned my blog into a book blog in May. Anyways back to my name, since I started out writing about the skating stuff, the link with Ice was easy, then there is this song called Ice Queen by Within Temptation. And Ice Queen's bookshelf was born. Two passions in one name.

Yes, this is my own personal meme! It's called Swinging Saturdays! 7. If you could meet any author, past or present, who would it be?
Ah, that's an easy one! L.J. Smith, I have been a big fan of all her work for a while now! I only miss two of her books in my collection, and I am still patiently waiting on the grand finale of the Nightworld series!

8.  Have any bookish pet peeves?
When authors copy and paste sentences throughout the book.. Please authors DON'T!!!!! Also when a book is full of grammar failures and the storyline is horrible as well, it makes me want to cry. (Yes even I notice grammer mistakes even though it is my second language)!

9. What are your favorite genres?
Well anything paranormal, shifters, werewolves, vampires, elfs, fairies, anything with mythology is very exciting because I love mythology! I also read a lot of romance, a bit of erotica and an ocassional historical novel or dutch literature novel.

10. If you could be a character from any book, travel to any world, who would you be? Where would you go? And (again from any book) who would you bring with you?
I think I would go to wonderland, I don't think I want to be Alice though, I think I would prefer to be the White Queen. How would I kidnap? Well I would kidnap Damon ofcourse (if he's not going to come then I have to persuade Ash (Nightworld series)) from the Vampire Diaries world. And we would make a wonderful couple and we would live happily ever after!

1. Do you listen to audio books?
Nope, none and I don't think that will change anytime soon. In my opinion it takes away the joy of actually reading, it seems kind of lazy!

2. How many books do you read per week?
At the moment maybe one if I am lucky, sometime only half a book. I have classes 4 evenings a week and am working fulltime so that leaves very little time to read. When I finish my last two courses and get my bachelor degree I will have more time to read so then I will get back to 2 or 3 books a week.

3. What is your favourite online book club?
I have two to be honest both are on Goodreads click on the logo and it will take you to the book club!







4. Which do you prefer print or e book?
That is a dilemma I have been struggling with for almost a year now. Finally did decided that I wanted an ereader, I got a Kindle for my birthday! Best gift ever! But I still like physical books, because they are visible, you can touch them look at them in a pretty book case. So I find myself at a crossroad not knowing which road to take, everytime I want to purchase a book.

5. Which book's cover is your favourite?
The covers of both Splintered and Unhinged they are so beautiful! Check out the cover artist's website here: http://www.ladysymphonia.com/ she has some other beautiful art on there as well! Seriously if I were to publish my own book I would want here for my cover artist!

6. What is your favourite beverage?
Well on the weekend I like a good ole beer brands like Heineken, Hertog Jan, I also enjoy specialty beer like Palm, Moreeke and Herfstbock. Week day, I drink lots and lots of coffee, and I love Red Bull!!!

Never heard of it, will check it out.
