Five magical book release coming this fall

Fall is coming a good moment to look at what to read this fall. If you are looking for anything new and magical coming out this fall you are at the right place here.

For you I have selected five fall releases that will bring you to a realm full magic things, witches, mages  folklore and a little bit of horror.

1. Bindle Punk Bruja by Desideria Mesa

Release date: 13 September 2022

I have noticed that the fantasy books have become more divers, at the start of specifically the young adult genre there was a lot of white based books, the last 10 years the fantasy genre got a lot more divers. And I love that new authors are bring us stories about their own cultures.

Now Bindle Punk Bruja is not a young adult, but an adult book. It is also not your typical fantasy story. It has witched like the title implies Bruja means witch in Spanish. It is also a story of racism, gangs, sexism and witches. And interesting mix no doubt and to top it off, it has an historical setting. From the synopsis it is not all that clear but I am guessing the 1920s.  The synopsis is a bit non telling about the magical extend of the this story, but I think it will be hard hitting on the emotional side.

Yo soy quien soy. I am who I am.

Luna--or depending on who's asking, Rose--is the white-passing daughter of an immigrant mother who has seen what happens to people from her culture. This world is prejudicial, and she must hide her identity in pursuit of owning an illegal jazz club. Using her cunning powers, Rose negotiates with dangerous criminals as she climbs up Kansas City's bootlegging ladder. Luna, however, runs the risk of losing everything if the crooked city councilmen and ruthless mobsters discover her ties to an immigrant boxcar community that secretly houses witches. Last thing she wants is to put her entire family in danger.

But this bruja with ever-growing magical abilities can never resist a good fight. With her new identity, Rose, an unabashed flapper, defies societal expectations all the while struggling to keep her true self and witchcraft in check. However, the harder she tries to avoid scrutiny, the more her efforts eventually capture unwanted attention. Soon, she finds herself surrounded by greed and every brand of bigotry--from local gangsters who want a piece of the action and businessmen who hate her diverse staff to the Ku Klux Klan and Al Capone. Will her earth magic be enough to save her friends and family? As much as she hates to admit it, she may need to learn to have faith in others--and learning to trust may prove to be her biggest ambition yet.

2. Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott

Release date: 13 September 2022

Have I ever told you that I am a huge fan of mythology, folklore and fairy tales? I am and the story of Baba Yaga has been one of my latest fascinations, I have another one about Baba Yaga on my wish list a middle grade, do you remember the House with Chicken Legs? With that amazing cover with the house on chicken legs on the front? I still need to read it but I am pretty sure that this is about Baba Yaga. Now this new release is about the house and about the descendants of Baba Yaga, who have long since immigrated to America.

So we are getting a story based on American soil, I don't know how I feel about that, but I am glad that these legends do make it across the world, the word of them still being spread through new stories. And I hope that the people that are reading them get intrigued enough that they will also look up the original story and will enjoy that one too. This book is definitely going on my TBR when I will get to it will be a mystery, but that is fine with me.

The Yaga siblings—Bellatine, a young woodworker, and Isaac, a wayfaring street performer and con artist—have been estranged since childhood, separated both by resentment and by wide miles of American highway. But when they learn that they are to receive a mysterious inheritance, the siblings are reunited—only to discover that their bequest isn’t land or money, but something far stranger: a sentient house on chicken legs.

Thistlefoot, as the house is called, has arrived from the Yagas’ ancestral home in Russia—but not alone. A sinister figure known only as the Longshadow Man has tracked it to American shores, bearing with him violent secrets from the past: fiery memories that have hidden in Isaac and Bellatine’s blood for generations. As the Yaga siblings embark with Thistlefoot on a final cross-country tour of their family’s traveling theater show, the Longshadow Man follows in relentless pursuit, seeding destruction in his wake. Ultimately, time, magic, and legacy must collide—erupting in a powerful conflagration to determine who gets to remember the past and craft a new future.

An enchanted adventure illuminated by Jewish myth and adorned with lyrical prose as tantalizing and sweet as briar berries, Thistlefoot is an immersive modern fantasy saga by a bold new talent.

3. One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

Release date: 27 September 2022

End of September seems a good time to dive in to a horror right? If you are as slow a reader as I am you might just finish around Halloween. This was described as a lush dark gothic fantasy. The concept of this one sounds fascinating a spirit being trapped in a human. A nightmare, I haven't read many books with this premise except maybe one, called Legacy of a Dreamer the link will bring you to the review I wrote about that one back in the day. It was an indie book, but a really good one. Anyway this is a debut author, and I really like what I am reading below, it just sounds like my kind of read. Maybe it will be as good as Mexican Gothic, which was incredible! I really hoping it will be.

Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.

Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom she calls home—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.

But nothing comes for free, especially magic.

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure the kingdom of the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King’s own nephew, Captain of the Destriers…and guilty of high treason.

He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

4. Legacy Witches by Cass Kay

Release date: 11 October 2022

I was looking for anything truly witchy and I found this, and this story sound like bad ass witch, maybe not ones from the good variety. And I read coven, that gets me excited! I haven't had a good witch coven story in years so I could use one. The book also is an adult one, and borders on horror if I have read correctly. Legacy Witches gives my all the vibes I want for a book filled with witchcraft. Actually this kind of gives me the Craft vibes, which is one of my favorite movies ever. Another one for my already too full TBR.
Coming from a long line of murderous witches hasn’t exactly been sunshine and rainbows for Vianna Roots. When she inherits the family’s haunted house after her mother dies, she decides flipping the rundown dump is her smartest move—but the ghosts that haunt her have a different plan.

When Vianna finds the ghost of her childhood friend Nancy, she’s drawn into the mystery surrounding her friend’s death. Her meddling attracts the attention of the oldest coven in Salem. In order to get her out of town, they make an offer on the house, but Vianna hesitates. She’s no longer sure she wants to abandon the demon familiar who possesses her home, the transgender outcast witch—who may just be the best friend she never knew she needed—and her high school crush, who now wants her in his life.

Vianna must find a way to solve the case of her murdered friend, stay out of the hands of the most powerful coven in Salem, and face the past she’s so desperately tried to run away from.

5. The Luminaries by Susan Dennard

Release date: 1 November 2022

This cover is what has drawn my attention to start with, it is so incredibly beautiful! It get me in the mood for fall and gives me halloween vibes. Susan Denard, is best know for here Witchland series, the first book in that series being Truthwitch. She is now coming with a new story, you can read the synopsis down below:

"Hemlock Falls isn't like other towns. You won't find it on a map, your phone won't work here, and the forest outside town might just kill you.

Winnie Wednesday wants nothing more than to join the Luminaries, the ancient order that protects Winnie's town—and the rest of humanity—from the monsters and nightmares that rise in the forest of Hemlock Falls every night.

Ever since her father was exposed as a witch and a traitor, Winnie and her family have been shunned. But on her sixteenth birthday, she can take the deadly Luminary hunter trials and prove herself true and loyal—and restore her family's good name. Or die trying.

But in order to survive, Winnie enlists the help of the one person who can help her train: Jay Friday, resident bad boy and Winnie’s ex-best friend. While Jay might be the most promising new hunter in Hemlock Falls, he also seems to know more about the nightmares of the forest than he should. Together, he and Winnie will discover a danger lurking in the forest no one in Hemlock Falls is prepared for.

Not all monsters can be slain, and not all nightmares are confined to the dark."

This sounds so good! It sound mysterious, and magical at the same time. I am not entirely
sure for which age category this is meant it sounds more like a YA book than an adult book, but I could be wrong. I read spooky forest with monsters and nightmares and was like yes that is what I need for fall!

That was it for the magical books, I ended up with more horror books than I thought. Imagine that, I guess that is what I am feeling at the moment. I do like horror, I just dipped my toes in a bit, and read Mexican Gothic, House of Hollow and Annihilation. So I am not yet an expert in the field.  I would love to try out some more.  I think the above all fit the magic bill, maybe not in the most typical way but I think these stories will be very original.

What will you be reading this fall?

First of all I want to thank Xpresso Book tours for the change to review this book. Unfortunately I did not finish the book in time to put up my review on the time I should, making me a day late. For those who have been waiting for my review, I am extremely sorry you had to wait this long. So I decided to make this review extra special!

Synopsis:

Fifteen year-old Cait Weerd has no idea she’s being sought by the undain: sorcerous creatures of necromancy that feed off the spirit of the living. She doesn’t know the undain need her blood to survive. She doesn’t even know she’s a witch, descended from a long line of witches. Cait Weerd doesn’t know a lot, really, but all that’s about to change.

At Manchester Central Library she’s caught up in sudden, horrific violence. In the chaos she’s handed an old book that’s been hidden there and told to run, hide the book or destroy it. It contains all the secrets of the undains’ existence. They and their human servants want to find that as much as they want Cait. What’s more, she learns that the fate of two worlds is at stake here. Just what she needs.

Along with definitely-not-a-boyfriend Danny, she has to decide what the hell to do. Run, fight or just hope it all goes away. It’s only then she learns who she really is, along with the terrible truth of what the undain have been doing in our world all this time …

Review

This book was not at all what I expected it to be, the synopsis doesn't do it justice (not that I could write a better on myself), in a good way. There is way more to this book then the synopsis lets on, this books is set in both the modern world and in the other world: which is cut in half by the river An. One side is the land Andar, the other side is the land of the "Undain" Angere.

Part of the story is told by two of the witches of Andar, Hellen and Fer. Their world intrigued me, it lured me in, it was like I walk right back into Middle-Earth or Alagaesia. Worlds I miss and haven't visited in a while.

I took me a while to find the connections in the story, the master plan and how the worlds work. It was interesting, it is an exciting thing when you first enter a new world, without know what you walked into. Fer, Ran and Johnny Electric set out for this world, Cait's world , but their travel is not without many obstacles. With them also traveled another interesting companion, an Archaeon, a bookworm, he made quiet an interesting character, he reminded me of another riddle speaking creature but I am not sure from which world. The fight agains evil has started and it is a wild ride, exciting, interesting and lovely.

This book is action-packed from beginning until the end, without a pause to breath. I devoured this book and I am very glad that I have signed up for the book tour! What made me decide to sign up for this book tour was the pretty cover, ain't it beautiful? Also the fact that it said witch on the cover caught my immediate interest. I love books with witches and haven't read many lately.

If you love stories like those of the masters of Fantasy, you might also like this one, even though this world is not as complex as that of for example Alagaesia, but it has a lot of similar elements in it. I can tell you that if you like urban and epic fantasy you will surely love to read this.

Rating

This book was fantastic! Great world-building, great realistic characters and very original.

Quotes

She charged at the creature. She still carried her school textbooks. Uselessly, not really knowing what she was doing, she tried to batter the monster with English Literature.

"It really exists?" Of course. Sung unceasingly at Islagray for years uncounted. Andar itself given voice. The spirit of the land. The beauty of it, the life and death of it." " I would be allowed to hear?"

"Spring always follows winter," Fer said. "True. But the winter doesn't care who lives through it and who dies."

Music

There is a scene in this book, where Cait is caught by Genera, the humans that work for the undain. This song, it fits the scene, the purpose, the business, and the machines.

Movies: Dark Shadows

Title: Dark Shadows

Director: Tim Burton
Runtime: 113 min
Release date: 10 May 2012

About Dark Shadows

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family.

Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet-or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

My review

This is a great movie, in it's own way, it might not be an award winning movie but oh how I love this movie! It's full of Tim Burton weirdness, the kind of weirdness I enjoy. I have been a fan of Tim Burton's work ever since I watched Nightmare Before Christmas, which is probably one of my favorite movies ever! Really if you haven't watched it go get it! But enough about The Nightmare Before Christmas this is the review for Dark Shadows.

Right... Let's get back to that! First thing that I love about this movie is the great music that bring's you to the seventies. Really great choice of music, then there is of course Depp. Johnny is another favorite of mine and in combination with Johnny Depp, its when Depp is at it's best.

This movie is funny, full of the paranormal, vampires, witches, and werewolves are all present, in one way or another. This story is really unique, it's a story about loss, love and revenge. Ok I can only say that this movie is amazing, the scene, the story, the time, the actors. I really love how it all worked out and I don't know, just go watch it! If you liked any of the Tim Burton movies, you will surely love this one!

About Fire Burn And Cauldron Bubble

Life isn't bad for psychic Jolie Wilkins. True, she doesn't have a love life to speak of, but she has a cute house in the suburbs of Los Angeles, a cat and a quirky best friend Christa.

Enter Rand Balfour, a sinfully attractive warlock who insists she's a witch and who just might turn her life upside down. Rand hires her to help him solve a mystery regarding the death of his client who also happens to be a ghost. Jolie not only uncovers the cause of the ghost's demise but, in the process, she brings him back to life!

Word of Jolie’s incredible ability to bring back the dead spreads like wildfire, putting her at the top of the underworld’s most wanted list. Consequently, she finds herself at the center of a custody battle between a villainous witch, a dangerous but oh-so-sexy vampire, and her warlock boss, Rand.

Important characters

Jolie:  The story is told from Jolie's point of view only. Jolie is such a character, she reminded me a bit of Bridget Jones (in the movie, I haven't read the books, shame on me I know), minus the overweighted part. Jolie also gets into those strange and awkward situations which made me laugh out loud. Also she doesn't believe she is a witch nor that she has an incredible power.

Rand: He is the to-die-for warlock, secretive, strange in some ways and very protective of Jolie. Although he has trouble explaining himself, nor does he seem to know what he wants. I think he fights a lot of battles in his head. This makes him an awesome character.

Christa: The remarkable thing about Christa is that she doesn't seem to be bother by the fact that the underworld exists. She walks inside a room filled with vampires, werewolves, demons, witches and warlocks without hesitation. She is a wonderful side character, also she is from now on my favourite bookish best friends!

Sinjin: Oh Sinjin, a vampire and a very old one at that. I am still not sure what his motives are. He is Always the gentlemen when it comes to Jolie. He's hot, a real ladies men but in a way that is very charming. I liked the conversations between Jolie and Sinjin, mostly because of the language use. He turns out to be a pretty decent vampire.

My opinion

The first thing that made me want to read this book was the funny cover. It promised laughing out loud, which was a promise that was kept! I laughed a lot which was good, the subject matter was light, not many shocking event that want to make you cry nor emotionally draining.  Just a quick light read!

The story some journey! with lots of bumps, magic, hot man, wicked witches, thirsty vampires,  funny ghosts on the way. At least it didn't have a major cliffhanger on the end pfiieew! I will continue this series, I am curious what the author has in store for us in the next books! I hope lots of fun!  All in all  I just enjoyed this story very much. Great characters, worldbuilding and writing! So that means 4 stars!

Music ~ Paolo Nutini ~ Last request

This song describes the relationship between Rand and Jolie. It also made me think of the scene where Jolie will have to defeat an faerie.
