Books: The Matched trilogy: Crossed & Reached

Yesterdays post consists of a review of Matched book 1 in the Matched Trilogy, for the readers that haven't read this trilogy, I thought it would be fun to do a preview of the other two books in this series. So here we go:

Book #2 Crossed

In search of a future that may not exist and faced with the decision of who to share it with, Cassia journeys to the Outer Provinces in pursuit of Ky - taken by the Society to his certain death - only to find that he has escaped, leaving a series of clues in his wake. Cassia's quest leads her to question much of what she holds dear, even as she finds glimmers of a different life across the border. But as Cassia nears resolve and certainty about her future with Ky, an invitation for rebellion, an unexpected betrayal, and a surprise visit from Xander - who may hold the key to the uprising and, still, to Cassia's heart - change the game once again. Nothing is as expected on the edge of Society, where crosses and double crosses make the path more twisted than ever.

Book #3 Reached

After leaving Society to desperately seek The Rising, and each other, Cassia and Ky have found what they were looking for, but at the cost of losing each other yet again. Cassia is assigned undercover in Central city, Ky outside the borders, an airship pilot with Indie. Xander is a medic, with a secret. All too soon, everything shifts again.

My thoughts:

I think these two will be full of action, so I think I will enjoy them more than the first one! Hope I will get a chance to read them in the near future!

Language: English, Nederlands
Number Pages: 369 p.

About Matched:

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate... until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

My opinion

I have been putting this review of for a while, since I am not entirely sure what the heck to tell you about this book. I mostly know what I want to say what I liked or disliked about the book, but this one left me with lots to think about.
I struggled with this book, I almost didn't make it to the end, but I am to damn curious not to finish, and the ending was worthwhile! The last hundred  pages is where everything was finally put in motion. Finally Cassia becomes the "rebel" we have been waiting on throughout the book.

What I liked:
  • The World-building: The world Ally has created is fascinating, the sheltered and planned life the people live, to me is incredibly boring. I wouldn't be able to last a day in that world. A world without creativity and freedom of mind. It is terrifying!
  • The growing love: The love that grows between Cassia and Ky, Ky the mystery guy who knows how to write, and shares many secrets with her. I hope to see more of Ky he is a great character.

What I didn't like:
  • Slow-pace: This story was slow paced lack a fair amount of action or maybe shocking moments, or drastic turns. I don't know, the fact remains that for me it was slow, which made me put it down too easy. That is also where I disagree with myself, thinking about the story line, this could not have been written in a faster pace, since breaking through such a sheltered bubble takes courage and time. So it had to be exactly how it is now.  But being the reason I almost didn't make it to the end it was a bad thing for me. It took me approximately a month to get through!

Rating

Well that's it, this book at first was a 3 stars for me, but considering the ending, how it made me think about the world, and the beautiful cover made me re-rate it so 3.5 stars!

Quotes

Cassia: They are giving us pieces of a real life instead of the whole thing. They have perfected the art of giving us just enought freedom; just enough that when we are ready to snap, a little bone is offered and we roll over, belly up, comfortable and placated like a dog
Cassia: I realize now how much courage it takes to choose the life you want, whatever that might be.

Books: Fire Burn And Cauldron Bubble ~ H.P. Mallory

Title: Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble

Published in: July 2010
Publisher: Self published
Number of pages: 246 p.
Language: English Only
Age category: Adult

Toil and Trouble #2

Something Witchy This Way Comes #5

About Fire Burn And Cauldron Bubble

Life isn't bad for psychic Jolie Wilkins. True, she doesn't have a love life to speak of, but she has a cute house in the suburbs of Los Angeles, a cat and a quirky best friend Christa.

Enter Rand Balfour, a sinfully attractive warlock who insists she's a witch and who just might turn her life upside down. Rand hires her to help him solve a mystery regarding the death of his client who also happens to be a ghost. Jolie not only uncovers the cause of the ghost's demise but, in the process, she brings him back to life!

Word of Jolie’s incredible ability to bring back the dead spreads like wildfire, putting her at the top of the underworld’s most wanted list. Consequently, she finds herself at the center of a custody battle between a villainous witch, a dangerous but oh-so-sexy vampire, and her warlock boss, Rand.

(Source: Goodreads)

Important characters

Jolie:  The story is told from Jolie's point of view only. Jolie is such a character, she reminded me a bit of Bridget Jones (in the movie, I haven't read the books, shame on me I know), minus the overweighted part. Jolie also gets into those strange and awkward situations which made me laugh out loud. Also she doesn't believe she is a witch nor that she has an incredible power.

Rand: He is the to-die-for warlock, secretive, strange in some ways and very protective of Jolie. Although he has trouble explaining himself, nor does he seem to know what he wants. I think he fights a lot of battles in his head. This makes him an awesome character.

Christa: The remarkable thing about Christa is that she doesn't seem to be bother by the fact that the underworld exists. She walks inside a room filled with vampires, werewolves, demons, witches and warlocks without hesitation. She is a wonderful side character, also she is from now on my favourite bookish best friends!

Sinjin: Oh Sinjin, a vampire and a very old one at that. I am still not sure what his motives are. He is Always the gentlemen when it comes to Jolie. He's hot, a real ladies men but in a way that is very charming. I liked the conversations between Jolie and Sinjin, mostly because of the language use. He turns out to be a pretty decent vampire.

My opinion

The first thing that made me want to read this book was the funny cover. It promised laughing out loud, which was a promise that was kept! I laughed a lot which was good, the subject matter was light, not many shocking event that want to make you cry nor emotionally draining.  Just a quick light read!

The story some journey! with lots of bumps, magic, hot man, wicked witches, thirsty vampires,  funny ghosts on the way. At least it didn't have a major cliffhanger on the end pfiieew! I will continue this series, I am curious what the author has in store for us in the next books! I hope lots of fun!  All in all  I just enjoyed this story very much. Great characters, worldbuilding and writing! So that means 4 stars!

Music ~ Paolo Nutini ~ Last request

This song describes the relationship between Rand and Jolie. It also made me think of the scene where Jolie will have to defeat an faerie.

Books: Prelude ~ KaSonndra Leigh

Title: The Prelude
Author: KaSonndra Leigh
Publisher: KaSonndra Leigh Books
Published: 5th April 2013
Number Pages: 222 p.
Series:A Musical Interlude #1
Age category: Adult
Genre Contemporary romance
Other books in the series:
An Aria In Venice, book # 1.5
Cresendo, book #2
Dark Duet, book #3

About The Prelude

After finishing design school six months ago, Erin Angelo left her tragic past behind in the States and started a new life in Milan, Italy. Burying the grief, silencing her demons, and living a life without any real attachments has worked well for her so far. But when Erin secures her first real job as a budding clothing designer, her controlled world is shaken to its core by the mysteriously sexy director of the local symphony.

Alek Dostov is a man who knows what he wants and how to get it. He’s successful, hot, the son of a millionaire, and women all over the world flock to see one of his performances. For Alek, Erin represents the ultimate challenge: sexy, smart, and unaffected by his charms…or so she thinks. Just like Erin, Alek avoids attachments that leave him emotionally vulnerable. But unlike Erin, his pursuit of all things pleasurable is ruthless.

Knowing how wary they both are concerning any kind of committed relationship, Alek finds a way to pursue Erin, satisfying the intense attraction between them without sacrificing the freedom they both enjoy. Sometimes the deepest passion brings out the darkest emotions. And Erin finds herself completely unprepared for the forbidden world of the young maestro and his truths and even his secrets, as she struggles to deal with her own.

Music, passion, betrayal and forbidden love spun together in one of the most romantic cities in the world.

This novel contains sexual situations and mature language. It is intended for an audience at 17+ years of age.
(source: Goodreads)

My Opinion

From the moment I started reading I was pulled in, the prologue the day Erin's life changed forever, had me in tears in no time. The story continues in Milan five years later at the fashion company she works for, and were she is about to meet her maestro.

From there the struggles, embarrassing moments, hauntings of the past but also the passion starts. And oh man, that passion is the sexiest thing ever! Those scenes are to make you melt in a puddle on the couch.
I love the complexity of the characters, the secrets and pasts that slowly unravel throughout the story. Some of these events, I didn't see coming! The past of Alek is very interesting, turns out his father is not really an honest man.

The other thing that will keep you wondering is what happened after Erin lost her dad and sisters. What happened between her and her mother? I couldn't figure it out and was very surprised when I did. This book is not your average romance there is a lot of emotional scenes, and I cried several times (especially at the end).

Another lovely thing about this book are all the musical references, the usage of one of my old time favourite songs: The Rose - Bette Midler, and the internal monologue of Erin which had me laughing, crying and feeling all kinds of other emotions throughout the book.

Conclusions

This is a MUST READ and I HIGHLY RECCOMEND IT! Beautifully written, funny, emotional and sexy as hell! 5 stars!!!

Quotes:

Erin: Well, it seems to me that the issue of dinner has already been handled. I mean, you're sitting right over here. Not too far away from me. That kinda takes care of issue number one. Don't you agree?
Erin: When inside I'm jumping like a bunny who found a big ass carrot garden.
Erin: Once you find the courage to open yourself up to something you've always  believed to be forbidden, then you never want to let it go. I always told myself that I would never give anyone this power over me again.

Music

Books: Hush, Hush ~ Becca Fitzpatrick

Title: Hush, Hush
Author: Becca Fitzpatrick
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Published: 13th, October, 2009
Number of Pages: 391 p.
Series: Hush Hush, book #1
Age category: Young Adult
Genre: Paranormal romance
Other books in the series:
Crecendo, book #2
Silence, book #3,
Finale #4

About Hush Hush

Romance was not part of Nora Grey's plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
All the things she has never dreamed of being real are crashing down on her, entering her world without permission. It all seems to revolve around her, will she be able to make the right decision in the end?
(Source: Goodreads)

Important characters:

Note: May contains spoilers!

Nora: The story is told from Nora's point of view. Nora is an average teenage human girl. Or that is what she things. Turns out she's only part human in the end.

Patch: Is a fallen angel, who wants to become human more than anything else, until he meets Nora. He is the big mystery, and remains a mystery until the end of the book. I still would like to know more about Patch especially about his past. Patch was the only character I really liked in this book, and kept me entertained.

Vee: Nora's best friend, I found her a bit (more than a bit) naïve, she trust complete strangers and doesn't listen to her best friends advice. She falls head over heels for Jules (seems a bit instant).

Elliot: Is the other new guy in school, the transfer from the private school. He seems to be the villain in the story but turns out to be a victim. But of what...

Jules/Chauncey: We don't see much of Jules, although it is Elliot's best friend, but he leaves Elliot alone with Vee and Nora most of the time. It left me wondering why and we will find out in the end, I will tell you one thing: He also isn't entirely human!

My Opinion

This was not what I expected it to be, I read a lot of promising reviews, seen a lot of positive reactions on good reads about this book. But I didn't get emotionally attached to this book, like I do with lots of other books.

The character that got me through this book was Patch I liked him because he was a mystery. Nora however, made the story difficult for me. She seems emotionally unattached, in various scenes of the book. Even the love between Nora and Patch seems abstract to me, this is why I didn't like it as much as some other books.

Although it is not mind-blowing, it is a real page-turner, it is easy to read, but sometimes the timeframes and scene-endings are a bit confusing. It is an ok start of the series, but I hope the other three books will be better. Hopefully we will get to know Patch a little better. I am curious about his past, so for me: More Patch and less Nora!

Conclusions

One last thing the cover is beautiful! And glittery! The Dutch cover however, is very ugly, I wish they used the same cover for the Dutch translation.  So  3 stars for a great cover, Patch and the surprise factor in the end!

Quotes:

“You possess other people's...bodies."

He accepted that statement with a nod.

"Do you want to possess my body?"

"I want to do a lot of things to your body, but that's not one of them.”

“Tell me what's going on here. Why can I hear your voice inside my head and why did you say you came to school for me?"

"I was tired of admiring your legs from a distance.”

Update! What am I reading this week?

Good morning everybody!

As you might have noticed I am making some changes to my blog, Facebook page Ice Cold Pasion.com starting wit a new name, new header and background. I now added some new details at the reviews as well, a cool new picture is added that will lead you to the author's website, and my five star rating system was turned from start to cool purple snowflakes! I also have a facebook-page now! You can like me on Facebook here:

So why haven't I added any new reviews lately? Well since I was photoshopping the whole weekend (which was a long weekend for me). I didn't get back to the books I was reading! So I'll give you an update on what's going on there now. Im reading three awesome very different books at the time:

Matched by Ally Condie, which is an interesting read sofar, the world mrs. Condie has created keeps you wondering, what if this would happen in modern days, what would it be like to have all creativity repressed, and not being able to create? The only problem I have with this book is that it is not a page turner, I can easily put it down, and the story is a bit slow.

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, is enjoyable, a page-turner. But it is lacking great characters I think. The characters feel abstract and emotionally unattached at some points. I had really high expectations (high rating and good reviews) of this book but it is a bit of a let down for now. Maybe the ending will change my point of view. But for now it just doesn't add up for me.

I received a digital copy of this book via Netgalley! Thanks you very much Kasonndra Leigh Books for giving me the opportunity to read your awesome book!
And it is awesome so far. The Prologue had me on the verge of tears! But it is not all drama and tears in this book. Both main characters are such interesting people! One being a fashion designer, the other a maestro! Awesome and lots of music going on in this books as well. Loving it!

Movies: Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters

One of my favourites books is going to the big screen, Percy Jackson and the sea of monsters (Book 2 in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series)!!! The 15th of August! This is one of the best series I own, the myths relive in this book it is awesome! Here's the trailer for the movie, it looks promising!! Better than the first movie Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief (Book 1 of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series)

Series: Existence #1

Genre: Paranormal romance

Ceaseless #3

About Existence

What happens when you're stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course.

Pagan Moore doesn't cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him.

Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn't let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he's dead.

Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.

He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.

(Source: GoodReads)

My Opinion

First of all, I love love love the cover, it is simple but beautiful!

Death breaking all the rules? I have always seen Death as the superior, without having someone above him to obey. On the other hand thinking about Greek Mythology, Hades still has to listen to Zeus so he has a superior, Tuoni and the Valkyrjas, had to listen to Odin, so maybe Death does work by certain rules, although in many cases Death does what Death wants even in mythology.

I fell in love with this book slowly, there are some great scenes, love building at a low pace. Although I can't understand some of Pagan's choices, like why doesn't she tell Leif, she is not in love with him? She had many chances to do so but she didn't. The books leaves us with a major cliffhanger in the end which had me looking up the synopsis of the next book just to get the info I wanted.

After Dank/Death decides to leave Pagan (I dislike this name very much btw, I don't know why), she ends up in a institution for mental patients. Here she meets one heck of a interesting side character, Gee! She had me shaking with laughter, because of her rudeness! She's brilliant, and her by give her the Award for Best Side Character, lol. Turns out she is not a mental patient after all, no I am not going share who she really is!

I haven't even began to discuss Dank! Dank is great, I like the songs he has written for Pagan, that he sings her to sleep every night! How romantic! That is about as romantic as you can get if you asked me! He can come sing me to sleep any time!

This book had me on the verge of tears. Would love to hear music to the songs in this book, and a sexy voice like Ville Vallo's (HIM) or maybe Nate Ruess (Fun).

I like to share one more quote with you to show you how much love is in this book:
“You tempt me. I can't be tempted. I'm not made to be tempted, but you, Pagan Moore, you tempt me. From the moment I came for you I was drawn in. Everything about you.."One of his hands left my waist and moved up to gently caress my arm. "You make me crazy with need. With want. I didn't understand it at first. But now I know. It's your soul calling to me. Souls mean nothing to me. They aren't supposed to. But yours has become my obsession.”

Rating

Looking forward to reading the other two books in the series! 5 stars!!!!! *bows to author*

My opinion

First of all, I don't think I have read any adventure books in like, years! I think the last was a Dutch book called Pinkeltje which was when I was a even littler Irene (with 1,53 meters I am still defined as a little person I think). I do watch a lot of adventure movies such as the Mummy, Tomb Raider, National Treasure or The Librarian, all favourites of mine. But adventure books? (looks over the shoulder at my bookshelf) Fantasy, more fantasy, non fiction, cook books, uh nope no adventures.

The thing about this book that pulled me in was the cover, there's a Husky dog on it! Another favourite, lol. I was very curious about the dog having any part in the book. And luckily he did, he's named Oreo, his owner is Alia.

I enjoyed this book, I liked Alia she's a little shy, overweighed, insecure which makes her different in a good way. She is not the perfect long legged girl you read about in other books. Then there is her opposite half, Zac popular, athletic, self-assured.

The story is told from both Alia's and Zac's point of view, but Jake and Cleo are the once that make this story totally great! Cleo who always speaks her mind and can be very bitchy. And Jake, the quiet Emo boy, the only thing he really wants to do is find his father. The contrast between all four characters, is what makes the characters realistic and easy to relate to either one or all.

Rating

Another reason why this book deserves a 3.5 rating is that there aren't many grammar issues, which I have encountered in other indie/self-published authors works! So, that's great for all the grammar snobs out there :).

I am very curious if there will be a sequel to this book, there is unfinished business in the end of the story, so I think there will be a sequel. I hope we will get to know Cleo and Jake a bit better then and what their background is.
